foundation shade. help!

Post by vickytan » Sat Apr 18, 2009 11:52 am

ive only used EDM before and so far, their 'sweet almond -olive' shade matches me best but its not perfect.
thing is, my skin oxidises quite a fair bit and the powder usually turn several shades darker than my neck after half a day or so.
i cannot use anything pink as it definitely ends up way too dark on me after my skin oxidises.
wat base colors should i be usin for your foundations ?
and also, how many scoops of what ?
i prefer a slightly lighter shade than my current skin tone, probably half to one shade lighter.
pls advise.

p/s: im asian.

thank u!

The Sweet Almond is a shade added after I was familiar with EDM. I am guessing what you need because I do better with pics in daylight. I think you will be Buttery Gold, Warm Gold or some blend of Buttery Gold and Ebony or Warm Gold and Ebony. Start with Warm Gold 1:8 unless you have a noticeable yellow tone to your skin, then start with Buttery Gold at the same ratio. You will most likely need to add Ivory, even up to 12 total scoops.

I am not sure Oxidizing is a good term for what is occurring with your makeup on your skin. What is happening is simply that the oil from your skin is darkening the foundation. The term 'oxidizing' would imply that a chemical reaction is taking place. This is not likely because all the ingredients involved are pretty much inert. I guess people call it that due to the color change like something is rusting. Just adding oil to a powder foundation darkens it quite a bit, and it is especially noticeable if the foundations are formulated with too much red. The only thing I can offer is that you are using foundation that is too dark and too red, and you are judging whether it is a match too soon. You really should be judging the color of your foundation no less than a half hour after application in your case. Do you generally have oily skin? Have you tried a primer for oil control, even a powder one?

yes my skin is generally oily and till date i have yet to find a suitable primer to match my mineral makeup.
my makeup always ends up few shades darker and it is very exasperating to see my face in one dark shade and my neck in a lighter one.
how do i prevent my makeup from darkening? and i noticed my makeup disappears once i get oily ?
anyway, for base colors, i should be using warm gold, buttery gold and ebony ?
should i take another pic of myself in daylight and upload here again?

For oiliness try our Oil Control Blur in the untinted color. Wear it under your foundation.

As for another pic, there is not really a need. Pics can only get one so far for determining your foundation recipe, the rest is your testing and adjusting. I can help you get started, but that is about all.

In matching your face or neck........I am not sure any of us were made to have the same neck and face color because our face generally hits the sun much more than the neck area. I usually try to come up with a happy medium that is close to both. Otherwise, I recommend never going out in the sun if you want them to match. If I am wearing a top that shows a bit of my chest, I usually try to match my chest color as they are on a similar plane and a mismatch shows more here than the face and neck when the neck is shaded by the face. The best place you can really see a difference in the neck and face color is the way we all stretch our face to the side to get it on the same plane as our neck. It really is not a good measure because we never naturally sit that way. Best advice......go for the best look sitting in a natural position.

The Oil Control Blur is definitely worth a sample. Especially if it helps to control the oiliness a little.

hey girls i've been using mineral makeup for a couple of months now, tried pure luxe but didn't like the staying power of the foundation so i've decided to give silk naturals a try since its gotten such awesome reviews. thing is, i'm asian but i'm pretty fair and i don't tan well...my skin just goes all red and flakey. any suggestions to a foundation mix? :)

Hi aquinos,

You will find a match in a similar grouping as the OP (original poster). Warm Gold, Buttery Gold, and Ebony will be the color bases you need to try. Since you are fair, you should start at about the same ratio (1:8) and go lighter if needed, again probably ending up close to 1:12. If you do have noticeable yellow, start with the Buttery. If not, start with the Warm Gold. If even the Warm Gold is too yellow, you will need to add in a little Ebony (with adding Ebony, you will also need to add more Ivory).
