How much finishing powder?

Post by egerandi » Sat Apr 04, 2009 3:43 am

Considering that I've been using SN for almost a year now, I'm still not sure on the amount of finishing powder I should be using. I have experimented (more like try accidentally dumped different amounts in the mixing bowl), but I don't even know where to start.

I'm using oil control (tinted or non) Blur, not the original finishing powder. I'm using about a scoop of foundation and sometimes I add Date Bait to the foundation, sometimes to Blur, and apply the foundation with a flat top kabuki, and the Blur with regular kabuki.

I just saw it in another thread that a bigger fluffy brush would work better for that, although the kabuki I'm using right now (EDM) is pretty fluffy (old, hehe).

So, what's the best way to apply (which tool) and what's the ideal amount to start with (and adjust from)?

Thanks!

If it's working, then you're doing it right :D

If it's not working, what I do is dump a bit of powder into my mixing bowl, get some of it on a powder brush, whack the powder brush against the side of the bowl a couple of times to tap off the excess, and use that. Repeat if it's not enough to dust my whole face, but it usually is - I don't use much finisher.

It's not really a science, more down to personal preference - so long as it isn't caking on you, you're probably fine. If reference helps any, I think I used a jar of Datebait in about ten months when I was using it most everyday. Some people go through a jar in two or three months, some it can be a year or more.

Ah, makes sense :) It doesn't cake, I would just get oily again pretty fast, so I figured I may not be using enough. I'll try some more and see how it goes. And I have to get some better light in my bathroom, it doesn't give me any good idea about what my face really looks like :( Other than that Blur looks like is going to last me about 5 mos.

Hi Egerandi,

I had never thought of mixing finishing powder in with foundation, what a great idea :D

I use either Tempt Tryst or Oil Control Blur depending on how my skin looks and currently like Rhys, shake a bit into a mixing bowl and swish a big fluffy brush into it & tap off the excess before applying to the areas I think need 'finishing'; your all in one bowl method would work wonders for Tempt Tryst but as I am only oily on the t-zone the 'fluffy brush' method is better for me with Oil Control Blur.

I don't usually find that I need to reapply but on an extra humid day or for an evening out where I definitely don't want a shiny nose, a tip I picked up years ago from a magazine comes in handy; if you take one of those retractable powder/blush brushes (dead cheap from any drug store) swirl it in the powder of your choice & tap off the excess before replacing the lid, prior to leaving the house. You can throw this into your on-the-go makeup bag and if you do find you need to touch up just nip to the powder room and you should have enough product inside the bristles to make you more presentable, without having to bring a jar of whichever product along with you. :)
