Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
Hi ladies,
I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for treatments (creams, serums) that lighten dark circles under the eyes.
Thanks!

Re: Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
On the SN line I would try the Super Serum, love it!
Not a SN product:
A few months ago I was watching a talk show(can’t remember the show name), they had a dermatologist on who was taking questions. Someone asked about under eye circles she said that most chronic under eye circles are caused by an allergies. Almost always by people who don’t think they have allergies. She went on to say most people will have noticeable improvement in 1-2 months using over the counter allergy medications like Claritin. She said it should be about 80-90% better, she than of course though everyone should go to their Dermatologist to get some widely expensive laser treatment to take care of the rest.
My under eye problems seem to be mostly sleep related otherwise I would give it a try, the allergy meds not the laser.

Re: Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
I was using a Lancome cleanser for awhile and my undereye circles seemed to get worse. I don't know what I was allergic to in the cleanser (could have been a lot of things) but as soon as I went back to Dr. Bronner's they improved again. I think the allergy hypothesis might have something to it.
Re: Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
I get horribly puffy eyes if I skip my allergy medication, and a bit of darkening. Vit K is supposed to be good for the darkies, and the eye cream I'm using from GoW right now seems to be helping - what I have though is mostly genetic and lack of sleep.
Basically, watch your diet, take some vits and supplements and take it easy on your eyes.
Don't believe everything you read on the internet, but this article has some good pointers:

Re: Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
Allergies cause them...sometimes they're just hereditary, some people have veins that are close to the surface and they just show more, sometimes it's leaky capillaries, and I've seen quite a few folks with plain old hyper pigmentation. Once you figure out why you have them, getting rid of them is a little bit easier.
I've been working on some things- it's just weird because there are so many different causes.

I just read something related to this in the latest Allure (special edition). They were describing a serum containing Brazilian ginseng, marapuama, and white lily. Sounds promising. Perhaps something for that eye cream we've been wishing for?
Here is the whole article (not sure about copyrights and stuff, but delete this if necessary):
"A mixture of herbs from Brazil has been shown to reduce dark circles under serum under the eyes. Researches studied 21 women, ages 20 to 55, instructing them to apply a serum containing Brazilian ginseng, marapuama, and white lily twice daily. After 28 days, 90 percent of the participants had measurable improvements in skin tone and luminance around their eyes, and 76 percent of them reported seeing positive changes in the appearance of dark circles, according to investigators' report in the Jounral of Cosmetic Dermatology. The treatment (called Bioskinup Contour) also reduced under eye puffiness and fine wrinkles, says lead study author Samara Eberlin, a researcher at Chemyunion Quimica, the company that makes the product. (Currently it is available only in Europe and Russia.) The herbs contain flavonoids and saponins, which are believed to improve circulation and fight inflammation and swelling, Eberlin explains. The causes of under eye circles are not well understood, she says, but factors that may contribute to or exacerbate the condition include sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, salty foods, dehydration, stress, and lack of sleep."

Re: Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
Thank you all for your replies!
I've naturally always had a little darkness around the eyes but it seems to have gotten darker over the years. No matter how much I sleep they don't seem to go away. I've been working on improving my diet and stress.. so maybe I'll see some kind of improvement. As far as I can tell with allergies, I don't think I'm allergic to anything. egerandi, that's a really interesting article with really impressive results... it would be really cool if they had somekind of before and after photos
Which GoW eye cream do you use? Karen - it would be awesome if SN had a eye serum for darkness! I'd volunteer and be a guinea pig if you need someone to test it out

I use Eye Majik: nice consistency, and the vit k in it seems to be helping with my darks.
Oh, that reminds me, Karen used to have a really cool cucumber green tea that unpuffed my eyes like nobody's business. Would be nice to have it back

Re: Creams, Serums to lighten dark eye circles
just to add to what karen was saying...
there are two types of under eye cirlces, or at least two that aren't related to allergies or sleep, blue and brown.
Blue under eye circles are caused by blood, be it veins, blood vessels, capillaries or even high blood pressure. And of course based on your genes your blood vessels just may sit that close to the surface. Which the reason why it's easier to see those blood vessels is because that part of your under eye doesn't have as thick of a hypodermis as the the rest of your skin. (Kenjali22- which as we age gets even thinner, so this is why they seem to get worse with age). The only real way to combat these circles is by strengthening the blood vessel walls (dietary more than likely) and really moisturizing that area. (egerandi- the vitamin K keeps blood from pooling in that area of the nasal passage so that's why it seems to diminish the circles
)
Brown under eye circles are caused by hyper pigmentation. This is where the little guys in your skin that produce melanin (the stuff that gives color to your skin) are overworking or over producing melanin. It's the same as brown spots but the reason behind sun spots is UVA rays have damaged the melanin producers instead of occurring naturally. So brown spots are just overactive melanin producers which give you brown under eye circles... you more commonly see this in ethnic skins. And just like brown spots only a cream that slows down the production of melanin really helps.
But if your dark circles disappear or lighten up significantly it's probably due to allergies or lack of sleep.
AND PS... Karen i would love you forever if you just came out with a very moisturizing eye cream for now then work on some under eye circle creams
