Eyeshadow Primer '?'

Post by JenW » Sat Mar 01, 2008 12:45 pm

Hello Ladies,
I am wondering how the Mac Paint Pots compare to UDPP. I have used UDPP for over 6 months and it is just so-so. I am wondering if it is worth the effort (I have to go about an hour away) for me to get a Paint Pot. Any other great eye primers worth a look?

Thanks,
JenW

Jen:

I don't have an answer for you but I am looking for an eye shadow primer. The one I have is discontinued.

I did submit the idea to Karen about an eye shadow primer (hint hint) but I know she has a lot on the go.

There is two MMU companies that have them and much more reasonable than UDPP. I don't want to post about other MMU companies here on Karen's forum but will on a general forum.

Monistat Chafing Gel works well as a primer for a lot of ladies. Very siliconey....I am not sure how well it would work for eye shadows. But it is cheap! and available at most drugstores, etc. (even in Canada now) IIRC the ingredients were similar to Smashbox.

I actually want to try the UDPP when I finish the stuff I have (Revlon Vital Radiance in a pot) but need to order online with $10.00 shipping.

Karen is fine with posting about other lines of products, especially here in the Chit Chat section. I would love it if there were a primer in the works for SN, and there may be one day.

I know on some owner forums it is suggested you do not talk about other MMU companies.

Other MMU companies that have eye shadow primer is Pure Luxe, My Minerals and Bath (this one might not be on her site but it is mentioned on her blog, so you might have to email her) and Fryianne. Fryianne is still operating at 30 - 45 days processing time.

She Space had developed one and sent samples with orders but at this point it is not for sale.

IMO I would rather try one from a MMU company than order UDPP.

I am curious if the Monistat gel would work on eyelids as a primer just because it is so cheap and available at the drugstore. I can't use silcones on my face but eye lids shoudl be OK. If I hear a lot of good feedback I will post.

Thank you, Autumn. I may even have a sample of the one form My Minerals Bath and Body. I will have to check!

I'm working on one! For what it's worth- I did some durability testing so I could have a "standard" to compare our new primer with and- on me UDPP works better than the Paint Pots- it's mainly personal preference, but I think the shadow goes on better over the UDPP. Of course it would figure that I'm allergic to UDPP- so I need some help from some testers for this formula.

I was just thinking about the exact same thing about an eyelid primer 30mins ago:)

BTW, does all primers have to contain silicone??

Nope - can't think of any reason why primers would HAVE to contain silicone. I think a lot of them do because it gives more slip (makeup goes on easier) but there are other ingredients that do that, too. It's kind of like the difference between SN foundation, which has great slip, no silicone, and stays on, versus some of the liquid brands that contain silicones - they work well for some folks, some break out from them, and a few of us scream: I can't get it OFF! :D

Theoretically silicones aren't necessary. But, eye shadow formulas tend to vary quite a bit between brands, and even from color to color, so for a product that has to be compatable with a wide range of formulas silicones are nice from a formulator's standpoint because the performance tends to be very consistent. Oils break down, powders change according to your body chemistry, but silicones are the same morning noon and night.

As a consumer I'm not a huge fan of the way a lot of companies use silicones in their formulas, and I think they are overused in the industry- but not all silicones are bad, and there are ways of using them in a formula so that you can get their benefits without some of the side effects that people get from them.

With that said- since you're asking about a primer, and I am working on one- what would your HG primer be?

I love UDPP but before I discovered that, I used Bobbi Brown Cream Shadow Stick in Vanilla. I have very oily skin, and oily eyelids, and if I don't prime, it will be all gone within a few hours. BB Cream Shadow Stick was like a "glue stick" on my eyelids, my eyeshadow stuck to it, and it wouldn't go anywhere after that. However, the texture of UDPP is superior and goes on more easily- with the BB, I had to kind of put some on my eyelid, let it warm and soften a bit, then blend it. But, I will say this- at least you know you can get all of BB's product out.
