Newbie Seeks Color Help - Pic Added

Post by Aeriel » Sun Aug 24, 2008 10:49 pm

Hi all, I'm yet another newbie wondering what to order. I'm not new to MMU and have used Everyday Minerals (Winged Butter, Olive Fair and Olive Medium mix), Meow (Naughty Abyssinian) and a couple of other brands too. In Mac, I'm an NC30. My best matches are medium-light shades with yellow/beige undertones only - no pink, peach or orange. Foundations with pink or peach tones look horrible on me, very phoney and much pinker than they look in the jar. Because of this I've had difficulty finding a good match in many brands, although the Meow product is just about perfect. (Meow's Manx works fairly well too, although it's a bit too peachy,) I'd love to find something cheaper than Meow, though!

So I'm thinking I should probably order the Ivory plus the Buttery Gold. My question is, will I need any of the other colored bases to get a match? It looks like they all contain colors I don't want, yet mixing only two shades seems like it's too easy, lol. Should I get anything else, or something else?

(Sorry for no photo - my photobucket album won't load tonight for some reason. I'll try to get a photo on here tomorrow.)

Welcome! I think the Buttery Gold will give you a great match- but as a backup, it may be good to have a sample of the Warm Gold on hand too.

Thanks for your input, Karen. I think I'll order the Medium Buttery Gold Starter Kit plus the sample kit of all the colored bases. I have had foundations that were too yellow, I have never known what to add to make them less yellow but not pink. I generally mix in a blue or lavender color corrector, which helps some.

Here's a very lousy picture that shows my skin tone pretty well:

I'm wearing makeup but it's minimal.

Any suggestions for blush or other products would be welcome too! I'm an old lady so I can't go too dramatic any more, much as I'd like to!

It is hard to tell from your pic which base you will be. If I had to take a guess, though, I'd go with Warm Gold. You also seem to be Medium in tone so you will need a 1 scoop color to about 4-6 white in the Medium Coverage Base.

For blush you might want to try Maybe Baby or Vixen. I might have more suggestions when I see the newer ones that just posted yesterday. For eyes I would need to know a little more about what color they are for color recommendations, but we have some very good neutrals. Fire and Brimstone come to mind. They have a bit of a shimmer. Also, there are some new ones with a satin finish that might work very well, too. Again, I will possibly have more suggestions in the next few days (I will have the new things in the mail to me soon.) Things that will really help me narrow things down for you is to know your eyecolor, and your favorite colors to wear in clothing, or past makeup favorites. Also, for "experienced" eyes I tend to recommend highlighters with a slight shimmer. The mattes are just not right for that texture of skin in that location. Almost anything will work for a crease or lid color, but I understand that you feel you need to lean toward less shimmery colors overall. Hopefully, we will get you to try some shimmery colors for fun!

Who's old?? When someone comes into the shop and says that I immediately grab the shimmery colors (at least within their comfort zone)- it perks you up! For blush- there are tons- Embrace would be my first choice, but there's Poppy, Lovelace and quite a few others that are fun-Jen's suggestions of Vixen and Maybe Baby are good too. Lippies- Foreplay, Berry Crush, Gold Blush- I've kind of started my own little Gold Blush for Grannies campaign in Trumansburg- it's just a fun color, and the sparkle just looks so youthful and fun- but not in the "trying too hard" way. A little Date Bait or Tempt Tryst would be good to try too.

Thank you both for your encourging replies! Yes, it is the "trying too hard" look that I'm trying to avoid. I love the shimmery, sparkly colors and continually remind myself to tone them down for work; I admit that when I'm home I let fly and wear whatever suits my mood. Most often that is not a conservative look! Underneath this old lady face is a rock star saying, "hey man, what the h-ll happened???" :D :D

I'm intrigued by the "morphing" eye shadows and definitely want to try some of those. Even in my most toned-down mode I like some shimmer for brow bones, and a highlighter for cheekbones too. Having had so much trouble finding a foundation without pink in it, I'm not inclined to put more pink on my cheeks, and usually wear a light peach, a cheekbone highlighter, and a bronzey color below my cheekbones for some subtle sculpting. I usually wear dramatic eye makeup, so I try to keep the rest of my face rather minimally made up. My eyes are a dark blue-gray.

As I mentioned before, I like Meow's Naughty Aby foundation and Kitty Kat blush (sort of a peachy brown); and in eye makeup I like EDM's Cypress, Room Addition, and Well Being. Those are all dark, shimmery colors that look their best when foiled. As to favorite colors to wear, I like almost all greens, medium grayish blues, all browns, especially very dark brown; and of course black, which I refuse to give up no matter what the color analysis people say. Very occasionally I'll wear coral or peach or bright spring green, but I generally prefer more subdued colors. Colors I never wear: stark white, pale pastels and most pinks.

So I'm going to stick with my plan for the Buttery Gold Kit plus samples, and try to get my foundation shade established first. I like to use a wet application method (mineral foundation mixed with moisturizer and water to make a sort of tinted moisturizer) and I hope the silk component in the foundation won't mind if I do that. Only way to know is to try, I guess.

I'll post again when I get my samples - thanks again for your input! I'm off to take a look at all the shades you recommended.

ETA - All the colors you ladies suggested look like they would work great for me! I couldn't resist the Fire & Brimstone e/s and ordered them as well as more samples. Can't wait to try all the new goodies!

Wow - that was just unbelievably easy!

My first order arrived today. I was pretty sure I was going to need Buttery Gold alone, but I got the pack with all the samples in it too, just in case. And I know my skin is sort of light medium, so I mixed up six scoops of Ivory and one scoop of Buttery Gold and bingo - instant match!

I was surprised though at how light the foundation looked when I first mixed it. I thought, that is gonna be way, way too light, but it darkened very quickly on my skin and also seemed to darken a bit after it had been mixed for a while. Am I imagining things here?

I wore it around for a while, then decided there was no reason not to mix up the rest of it, so I did. I really like the texture of this foundation much better than the EDM foundation, which is quite powdery by comparison. Also, it took me weeks of trial and error to find an acceptable match in EDM (that's how I figured out I have yellow and beige undertones and nothing else); but this was a perfect match with zero effort, it seemed. I am glad I don't have "complex" undertones to deal with.

I also got a few eye shadows - have tried Fire & Brimstone and am loving them! Can't wait to try the others.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I look forward to trying out more new dust!

Woohoo! I'm so happy for you, Aeriel! It's sometimes tough for people to imagine how simple the "mixing" is,LOL! I am 55 & I *love* the fact that SN's products do not accentuate any lines or cause any dryness for me. The products are downright *decadent*!

Don’t worry Aeriel your not crazy. I find that mineral foundations usually look different in the jar. Welcome to Silk Naturals.
