lip gloss trouble

Post by zeebs » Tue Jul 01, 2008 1:15 am

Oh, boy.

I tried Foreplay gloss tonight. Contrary to my expectations, it did NOT work at ALL on me. After hearing lots of gals on here rave about it and by looking at the swatch, I thought it would be this perfect light pinky gold color.

Nope. It looked kinda dark and, sickly? Yeah, sickly. Unnatural. Ghoul-like.

Sooo I am kind of at a loss as to what shades to try next.

I thought Capricious and Rare Berry were better, but still not amazing. Rare Berry is closest to my natural color but is several shades darker.

I want something light and playful (and neutral?) but not too girlish or pink. Something in the same family as Rare Berry - only lighter - would probably work.

Foundation: 7 white, 1 ebony, 1/4 buttery gold.
Disco eyeshadow works better than Whisper, Sapphire, or Taupetastic.

Lighter and more playful.....I realy think you will like Gold Blush. It sounds as if you need lighter than Foreplay, but not pink. That is kind of tough excluding pink. Rare Berry is quite pigmented, too. I almost wonder if the pigment level was not what you were expecting.

Let's go with light, but not pink, and these would be Toffee, Rhonda, and Sarrah. Gold Blush can fall here just because it is so sheer, that mostly your own lip color shows through with a little gold sparkle. Toffee is a light peachy brown, Rhonda is a lavender bronze, Sarrah is a sheer coral red.

Light that is pink- Pout and Darling. Darling is similar to Foreplay, but not quite so pigmented. Pout might fall into your 'too girlish' category.

Really there might be something perfect for you (along with Gold Blush!!) in MOAC Wave 3. I know of a few that might interest you, but have not yet tried them myself.

Jen, I think you might be right about Gold Blush. I was thinking of trying it based on some advice given to other users in the forum. I have had Toffee on my wish list for awhile now so I'll give that a whirl, too. What do you think of Sherry? Would it be too peach?

Initially, yes I was surprised by how dark Foreplay is (I imagined it sheerer and lighter) but Rare Berry is darker on me but looks better. It is definitely something with the pigment that doesn't work with my skin. It seems kind of pasty, looks too peach or something? I think it is bringing out the yellow in my face and fighting with it. That is a common problem with lip color for me, as most lighter colors tend towards the pink side. Same with blushes - can't do pink, so I have a really hard time with them.

Thanks for the help and let me know about Sherry.

Sherry will probably be too peach for you, but then it really is just straight peach with no pink. It is less pink than Foreplay. It might work for fall. If you like Disco, you are a warm pink gal.

One thing I have found, I tend to go in cycles depending on the season. When it is colder and I am pale, I like more muted colors. When it is summer and I have a tan, I feel I can carry off the brighter stuff. Maybe you should be looking at more nudes (Toffee fits this and Gold Blush is kind of the best of both- nudish with a little fun.)

I've decided on Gold Blush, Toffee, and Indulge.

update -
Gold Blush was good - much better than Foreplay. It is golder, not quite as peach. Still not what I would pick as a nude lip color for myself but certainly it's wearable.

Rhonda actually shocked me. On my hand, very purple, but on my lips, almost a sheer pink wash. Very subtle, very nice, didn't fight with my skin tone at all.

Rare Berry is still the closest to nude (but dark, since I'm pale). Is there a lighter version of this?

Capricious isn't the best match but rather looks very metallic (almost coppery) and very pink on me, but it's not bad, definitely wearable especially for summer.

Toffee, Indulge, Berry Crush, and Beloved are on my wish list now. Think any of those would be too dark, knowing Rare Berry is as dark as I can handle? Breathless, Grace, or Pout?

Indulge will have the most pigment. Delight is a good choice in the same shade, but different formulation and a little less pigment.

Toffee will be another wash type color, but a pretty neutral carmel color. On you it might be perfect for your dramatic eye days.

Berry Crush is frosty pink on the warm side. It is amped up Gold Blush on the pink side, but pink in the range of Rare Berry, but lighter. (Did you get all that ;) )

Beloved is warm reddish pink amped up version of Gold Blush.

Breathless seems to work for just about everyone.
Grace is a mid tone neutral pink, meaning not really warm or cool, but balanced. Not a nude pink, but on some it is their natural lip color.
Pout is more of a bubblegum frosty pink. Balanced neutral, but not nude.

If you love Rhonda, I'd go with Pout!!!! Also, Toffee!

It would be awesome if we could buy sample sets of different lippies.
Set of nudes, set of pinks, etc. Even if it's just a bit on a cotton bud.
The lippies are very subjective. Even if you may be cool, warm, or neutral - if your lips are light or dark, pink or brown - can make a big difference on how they look on.
